Pensioner Jailed For Raping Boy, 3, While Babysitting
Friday 18th July 2014
A 66-year-old man has been jailed for life for raping a three-year-old boy who he was babysitting.
Barry John Britton got to know the boy's family and gained their trust sufficiently to be allowed to babysit the child. He then abused and raped the toddler.
His actions were only discovered by chance following a conversation between the three-year-old and his grandmother.
Mr Britton initially refused to co-operate with police, but changed his plea to admit four counts of sexual assault, including two counts of rape. He was given life sentence with a minimum term of five years.
Detective Sergeant Tom Haines said: "Barry John Britton is a predatory offender who befriended this family in order to abuse their child.
"Officers acted quickly and secured the evidence required to charge him with these serious offences.
"The family can now be assured that their son and other children are safe from this dangerous man and that he has been brought to justice."
