Elderly Woman Badly Hurt By Fleeing Theft Suspect

Police say an elderly woman has been seriously injured after being knocked over by a suspected shoplifter in southwest London.

The man fled from a department store in St George's Road, Wimbledon yesterday afternoon, after being seen shoplifting by store security along with another man.

While making his escape he hit the 83 year old woman, knocking her over. She recieved serious injuries and is in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

A 40 year old man was arrested at the scene and later charged with one count of theft from a shop.

A 36-year-old man handed himself into police later that same day and was arrested on suspicion of GBH. He currently remains in custody at a south London police station.
