A Fox News host said Donald Trump looking at the solar eclipse without glasses was "perhaps the most impressive thing any president has ever done".

Tucker Carlson was ridiculed for his over-the-top remark after the first total solar eclipse for 38 years.

President Trump stood on the balcony of the White House with Melania, but at first, he was staring up at the sun without any eye protection.

Speaking on Fox News, host Carlson said: "The entire country saw at least 60% of the sun covered up by the moon.

"The President saw it. But in a move that is not a complete surprise, he looked entirely at the sun without any glasses, perhaps the most impressive thing any president has ever done."

Looking at a solar eclipse without any glasses can lead to solar retinopathy, which can seriously damage your retinas.

Mr Trump did eventually put glasses on to watch the rest of the solar eclipse.
