Precious

PreciousBased on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire

A heartbreaking story; a film that's really tough to watch at times, but is so rewarding.  Movies with this emotional power are so rare - and this is easily one of the best dramas I've seen in months.

Gabourey Sidibe plays the title role: a teenage girl living a miserable existence in a world so full of despair that she frequently escapes into moments of fantasy.  She is given an opportunity to change her life, but not before overcoming countless obstacles.  We're taken on an incredible journey and Sidibe makes us root for her character at every turn.  Mariah Carey and Lenny Kravitz both appear in small, but important roles.  Both are excellent, especially Carey (I think we can now forgive her for 'Glitter').  But it's Mo'Nique who deserves the most praise, stealing every scene in which she appears as Precious's lethargic, spiteful and abusive mother.  Surely she's guaranteed the Best Supporting Actress Oscar?

I saw 'Precious' at the beginning of the week and haven't stopped thinking about it since.  It's an amazing film.
