The show was dominated by food and drink last night. First of all the controversial "free school milk" argument. In fact of course it has long since gone, and is just free for 4 year olds in day care. Many questioned it's value - pointing out that the poorer families already get milk vouchers. Many had unpleasant memories of their time as milk monitors dishing out luke warm bottles of milk. Some loved it, some didn't. One volunteered to be milk monitor so he didn't have to drink it. We also discussed whether it is natural or necessary to be drinking so much milk from another creature. Rickets is reappearing as an illness but it appears this is not because of a lack of milk, but a lack of sunshine. Possibly too many children not getting out, preferring the company of the X Box.
At the same time the Government is considering a plan to get all cafes bars and restaurants to include calorific information in their menus. Would this make any difference to our choices? They hope it might encourage chefs to offer smaller portions! I doubt it. What restaurant is going to want to put people off their dishes? I am reminded of the recent study revealing that the average Chinese takeaway meal can add up to the whole of a woman's recommended calorie intake for the day. Maybe skip the sweet and sour pork balls?
Finally Ken Livingstone launches a campaign to Save London Pubs! A worthy aim no doubt, but few agreed with his claim that local pubs are at the heart of the community. They maybe in the soaps, but nowadays there's more of the community to be found in Sainsburys and Starbucks.
