Will a private transport network in London work?

Posted by Ken Livingstone on January 09, 2010 at 13:46PM

Are Alistair Darlings cuts workable, do we need to ban dangerous dogs and should we introduce a private transport network in London?

Alistair Darling today warned of 20 years of severe cuts if Labour gets back in government. If these cuts go ahead, the main areas in London that will be affected by them will be policing and transport. Would you welcome cuts in spending in certain areas to make sure there's no waste? Tony Travers joined me to explain the policy implications of the cuts.

Lucy McDonald was in the studio to look through the days papers, and the one story that really jumped out was the use of dangerous dogs. Many young men have these dogs, but are they for protection or a weapon? Many of you phoned in to tell me your story about how your dogs have been attacked and how much of a menace these animals are.

Finally, we looked at the prospect of a fully private transport network in London. TFL has written off millions of pounds in lost projects but would this happen if everything was private? Other countries have fully private networks, but why it would fail in London is simply the fact that it would cost the consumer a lot of money. To operate, new lines and tracks would need to be installed costing millions. As far as I'm concerned, public is best!

more from me next week!
