Our Recommendations

LBC

LBC's Free iPhone App
The iPhone doesn't have an FM radio, but that doesn't mean you have to do without London's Biggest Conversation. Download this free app from iTunes and you’ll be able to listen to LBC wherever you are.
Free

Games

Simon
Remember that classic game you used to play where you had to repeat a pattern back to the computer? Well, you can re-live it with this free app.
Free

Unblock Me
A fiendish, fun and above all addictive game where you have to slide blocks around the screen to get them through the holes. It will drive you nuts!

£0.59

Doodle Jump
A very addictive game, as you have to bounce on a series of platforms to rise as high as possible. Very simple and very good fun.
£0.59

Angry Birds
Use slingshots to knock over jenga-like towers. For just 59p, you can a massive 63 levels, which require logic skill and brute force to complete.
£0.59

Haunted 3D Rollercoaster Rush
Petrie tried this game on-air and couldn’t concentrate on anything else. The free version is great, but you’ll want to download the full version for £1.79 once you’re addicted.
Free

Tap Tap revenge 3
Simply tap along to the music to get the top points. Another fiendishly addictive game which you can play against others online.
£0.59

Paper Toss
One of the most fun games on the iPhone. It's simply attempting to throw a piece of scrunched up paper into a bin, but it's very good fun.
Free

BMW Sauber F1 Team Racing 09 Lite
Compete in a season of Formula One with the BMW team. This is the free version, but if you enjoy it, there is a premium version at £1.19.
Free

Who Wants To Be A Millionaire
Based on the hit TV show, do you have what it takes to answer 15 questions correctly and become a virtual millionaire?
£2.99

Travel

NDrive
If you don't want to pay too much for satellite navigation on your iPhone - such as the £54.99 TomTom app - then take a look at the NDrive app. Costing just £5, this app is an excellent sat-nav system for driving and at a price that definitely can't be beaten.
£4.99

Plane Finder
Click on the map and it will show you all the planes flying over Britain right now. When you click on one, it will tell you the flight number, along with altitude and speed! A dream for plane anoraks.
£2.99

ShipFinder
It’s like PlaneFinder, but for ships. Petrie labelled it “rubbish” and doesn’t even want it included on this list!
Free

Tube Refund
If your tube is 15 minutes late, you are entitled to a refund, but most people don’t bother filling in the form. This clever app fills in the form for you and sends it off!
£0.59

Useful

Opera Web Browser
An alternative to Safari, the built-in iPhone web browser. It comes up with squares with recommendations on sites to visit. So far, I prefer Safari, but it’s good to have another alternative.
Free

Google Mobile App
Rather than typing in your search, you simply speak it into your iPhone. Useful and good fun! It will also search for businesses near you, based on your phone’s GPS.
Free

My Fitness Instructor
An instructor from the British Military supplies you with a fully-personalised workout. It features 5million fully-voiced workout sessions, with a real military instructor giving you advice throughout.
£8.99

National Trust
If you fancy a day out, download the National Trust app for free and it will use your iPhone's GPS to tell you the nearest National Trust estates and properties to you. Darren loves it, but Petrie thinks it's really dull!
Free

Met Office
Gives very accurate satellite details for the weather across Britain. Much more impressive than the built-in iPhone weather information.
Free

iHeight - Altimeter
An app that measures your height above sea level, using your phone’s GPS functionality.
From Mick in Crystal Palace
£0.59

Sleep Cycle Alarm Clock
You plug it in to the charger, then put it under the sheet in the corner of your bed. Then tell it when you want to wake up in the morning. It will then wake you up in the 30 minutes before your allotted time, but only when you are in the lightest phase of sleep. It does this by measuring the movement in bed using the iPhone’s accelerometer. I was very doubtful that it would work, but since using it, I have had the best week’s sleep I’ve had for ages.
£0.59

Duel Level
What a brilliant idea. Never have a wonky picture frame on your wall again with this spirit level.
£0.59

iPhone Catch-Up TV
This isn't an app, but does allow you to watch live TV on your iPhone. See our gadget of the week review for details.

Spotify
Unlike the web version, the iPhone app for Spotify isn't free, but it's still great value. See our gadget of the week of an in-depth review.
£10 per month

AirMouse
A very handy app, which turns your iPhone into a wireless mouse. Allows you to control your computer – both Mac and PC – very easily from your iPhone.
£1.19
(Thanks to Malcolm in Hackney)

Dropbox
Whenever you update a document or a photo, it will automatically update the document on your iPhone or laptop. Amazing. And even better, it's free!
Free

LogMeIn Ignition
Make your iPhone an extension of your home computer. LogMeIn allows you to log into your computer through your iPhone.
£17.99

SugarSync
Allows you to place files on a central server so you can access them anywhere around the world. Ideal for students, or people who work abroad a lot. iDisk on the Mac works in a similar way.
Free for 2GB of free space

Networking

iUni
Find out if a university has clearing places with this useful iPhone app. Suitable for all sixth formers still trying to find a uni place.
Free

Facebook App
Much faster than before and you can now do most of the functions you can do on the website, including looking at what events you are attending, which was missing on the previous app.
Free

Random

iGorilla
Follow the lives of mountain gorillas in the Congo as the remaining 700 fight for survival. Proceeds from the app go to charity.
£2.39

Talking Tom
The silliest app I’ve seen for a long time – a talking cat which repeats everything you say in a silly voice. Endlessly entertaining! A free alternative to the popular Talking Carl.
Free

Aging Booth
You put your photo on your iPhone and it shows you want you will look like in 20 years’ time. I’ve just put Petrie in and she’s not happy with the result!
£0.59

Bloom
By Brian Eno, this is a generative music app, allowing you to compose your own music just by touching the screen. Looks lovely and sounds even better.
Recommended by Tony, West Hampstead
