Rick Kelsey's West Coast Cycle - Photos
In April, LBC's Rick Kelsey is cycling California down to the Mexico
border for Cardiomyopathy - heart muscle
disease. They specifically aim to encourage young people with a family
history of problems to be tested preventing sudden death
syndrome. They are going to take up to 3 weeks for the trip
unsupported by vehicles, but hope to complete in twelve - fifteen days
straight cycling. This charity is one that is very close to their hearts
and they are looking to raise £5000 for the cause.

Blog Day 1
On the eve of setting out on a 1200 kilometre plus journey, it has
only just dawned on me how enormous our task is. I'm also quite
surprised by the weather on parts of the Pacific Coast right now, in San
Francisco its only 9.8 degrees which is cooler than
I thought, even cooler than here in the UK; where we have been
experiencing the eternal winter.
Just tweaking the last bits of my bike at the moment, putting on
some new cleats for my pedals, fitting panniers, adjusting my riding
position, all things that three months ago, I would have thought
belonged in the Equine Olympics. I cant say I haven't
had the time to plan but training in the winter on a bike has its
limitations. Firstly the cold, then the light, then... the motivation.
Motivation is something luckily I tend to have quite a lot of,
but I'll need it! Compared to the three lads I'm going with I am pants
on a bike. Our first training weekend to Brighton didn't get off to the
greatest of starts. I had put my bike together
over a bottle of New Zealand Sauvignon at 3am and then turned up
unknowingly in Clapham having put my handlebars on in the wrong
direction , much to the bemusement of my fellow colleagues in team
Lycra.
See you in Cali, don't forget you can keep up with my progress on
The Steve Allen Show on LBC 97.3 from 530am and on the LBC website.
