'Shark' Spotted In Finsbury Park Lake

Thursday 7th August 2014

Boaters and bystanders alike were shocked today to see what appeared to be a shark swimming in the Finsbury boating lake in North London.

Observers looked on as a large fin-like object floated along the surface of the water, uncomfortably close for some who were more than surprised to see a shark in fresh water.

Fortunately, it was all a publicity stunt to promote the Discovery Channel’s Shark Week, set to premiere on the channel 10th August.

The guests of a private filming event at the site could not tell the difference between a real shark and this one, created by BAFTA award winning art director and special effects designer, Jamie Campbell.

The hand carved polystyrene fin was controlled by an underwater pulley system with cameras set up all around to catch people’s surprised reactions.

Shark week is the Discovery Channel’s premier week for all things shark related. The channel will show 24 hour shark related programming through the week of Sunday 10th-Saturday 16th.

A spokesman for Discovery Channel said: “When you go for a genteel early morning ride around the shallow Finsbury Park Boating Lake, the last thing you would expect to encounter is one of nature’s most renowned predators.  All of the boaters saw the funny side and we can assure everyone that it is perfectly safe to go back in the water.”
