Simon Calder's Half-Term Trip Tips
If you happen to be the parent of a school-age child, you'll know that the last break before Christmas is fast approaching. Most schools break up on Friday afternoon 21st October and reassemble on Monday 31st October. In between, demand for travel increases sharply - pushing up prices to typically 50 or 100 per cent more than the usual levels for this time of year.
So, whether you are a family seeking a last-minute break, or a couple puzzled about the spike in holiday costs, you may find these suggestions useful.
TRAIN "Sorry, the last cheapest ticket was sold" - when I was researching fares from St Pancras to Paris, that was the message from Eurostar.com. A return ticket could easily cost £249. So instead head for Brussels, which is accessible for £129, for example out on an early train on Tuesday 25th, back last thing on Thursday. And unlike the airlines, children are entitled to a discount.
