Take me shopping in... Camden

Camden is renowned for it's alternative scene and unusual inhabitants. From tattoo parlours to biker jacket shops, it's the circus of character-driven vendors that pulls in the tourists to this electric area. But there is so much more hidden down the back alleys of this area, we take the tour and introduce you to some of the best spots to be.

As you leave the station and head down towards the lock along the high street, you see an array shops spilling out on to the pavement selling leather goods. One of the oldest with a fantastic selection of bags and jackets is Gohils. Vibha from Urmston says, "It's so great to be able know there is still a fantastic handmade quality leather shop which has been running since the 60's. Fantastic handmade products and quality products that will last a lifetime." We couldn't agree more, independent stores such as this are rare and one that has been going so long is obviously doing something right.

Inverness Street has the famous pub The Good Mixer situated on it. Popular with media hounds and budding music artists, networking and general socialising is at the hub of this establishment. Also along this street you'll find Mega City Comic, an independent comic book and collectors shop that has an excellent selection of graphic novels and rare 1960s issues of comics. The only down side to this store is that most of the items are in sealed packets so you can't flick through them, but that does mean that the quality is better than other places.

If you are looking for vintage fashion and style then look no further than Camden Market. They have a selection of stalls that sell amazing one off designs as well as classic vintage pieces. Gregory says, "You have to love Camden Market, it's all about the character of the place, with a great range of unusual clothes and stalls." And he's right. There is a range of wares for sale that can cater for almost every taste. Sometimes it's just nice to go down there and have a wonder without the intention of buying anything. Suzy from Covent Garden thinks, "Its funny to see punks and people dressed in weird ways" but we just see that as part of its character.

There is more than just the market too, Beyond Retro and Modern Age Vintage Clothing both on Chalk Farm Road are really popular shopping spots. Beyond Retro is one of three store that sell clothes of varying quality, they do have some authentic vintage tea dresses from the 40s and 50s but also brogue men’s shoes and trilby hats that are extremely fashionable at the moment. Modern Age Vintage Clothing is a London favourite and listed as a Time Out recommended vintage store. It is great for coats and accessories although the quality of the items can vary.

If you are in the area, you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to eating out, our top spot is Caribbean restaurant the Mango Room on Kentish Town Road. The food is fresh and different and represents the cultural diversity of the area perfectly. For an afternoon snack or relaxing lunch, it's ideal.
