Take me shopping in...Stoke Newington
Stoke Newington is small in size but big in personality. If you were writing a lonely hearts ad for the place it would probably say, 'Yummy mummy with vintage style and postive outlook on life seeks a classic, handsome man.' Maybe we're looking a little too deep into the personality of this area but it's relaxed neighbourhood and quirky independent shops makes it a perfect shopping environment.
If you are a sucker for designer clothes Hub on Church street is a perfect shop too start with. From classic Dents accessories to their own designer clothes by designer Beth Graham, this is a great place to pick up something truly unique. The prices are dear but their sale rail can hold a bargain or two. Just down the road they have their menswear Hub store that also stocks some beautifully made clothes with terrifying price tags.
There are a few jewellers dotted around this area but one of the most contemporary and well priced is Metal Crumble . A large selection of semi precious stones and funky designed items. If you prefer more traditional designs, just next door Affinity sells beautiful silver lockets, earrings, pendants and more. Both are worth popping into for gift ideas, or even if you just fancy spoiling yourself.
Route 73 Kids is a traditional toy shop, independently run with excellent staff who really knows their stuff. If you are buying for a child, they make it really simple for you, separating the shop into different age groups. There are loads of wooden toys, cuddly teddy bears, puppets and puzzles. If you just fancy a wonder around and you're only window shopping, its always fun to pop in and play with the toys.
You can't visit Stoke Newington without popping into Fresh and Wild where you will find a selection of organic, free range and fairtrade foods. They have tasting platters out most weekends so you can try before you buy and friendly staff who are always happy to help. They have a bakery on site and make delicious breads as well as a place where you can pick up freshly made smoothies.
Church Street is a Pandora's Box for vintage clothing with Mr. Red, Ribbons and Taylor and the smaller Casino serving up a selection of items from the thirties to the eighties. All of them are reasonably priced with stock replenished regularly to keep you coming back for more.
Finally, if you fancy stopping off for some refreshment along the way you will be spoilt for choice. The Blue Legume has to be one of our favourites, with a small seating area out the back that is light and airy. They have satisfying breakfasts and their chocolate brownie can tempt even the most religious dieter. But there is a great selection in the area, from delicatessen Lemon Monkey to retro styled Tea Rooms.
Try a try to Stoke Newington this weekend and explore a little bit more of the city.
