The Best British Beef

It's been over 7 years since France let Britain know its beef wasn't good enough after refusing to lift its ban. British beef has come forward since the BSE disgrace it caused our food industry and we now embrace it whole heartedly.

Vegetarians look away as we find the melt in the mouth meat of British beef in restaurants across London.

steak long large.jpgDon't be fooled by the American style of decor in Sophie’s Steakhouse , South Kensington. You will only find British beef on your plates and the steaks have been dry aged for 28 days, to make them flavoursome. Alex from Parson's Green gave the restaurant five stars, stating 'The food is fantastic, great menu with good British grub, from steaks to fish pie, or burgers.' The one complaint about this fantastic steakhouse is that you can't book a table, which even though it is frustrating Caitlin from Knightsbridge still thinks this is one of the best places to spend an evening in London.

Steak doesn't get more succulent than at The Popeseye Steak House in Hammersmith. Hung for a minimum of two weeks which gives it its distinctive flavour and reared within the British Isles, you can get a 30 oz fillet steak for about £48. The menu is basic and if you don't eat beef, you'll leave feeling pretty hungry. Everything Popeseye does with the beef is done to perfection, the way the animals are raised, the way the meat are hung and the whole cooking process. The wine list isn't extensive yet still impressive, making this a meaty champion in the Greater London area.

We can't really discuss great British produce without mentioning Smiths Of Smithfield . This five storey restaurant and bar caters for everyone and it's the fine meats they serve on the top floor that have us dribbling. Meat is clearly labelled with its place of origin and served in traditional sauces with satisfying sides.
Meg from Mortlake describes it as 'tasty, simple dishes with fresh ingredients and served in a quick and non-fussy way, accompanied by some excellent wines' and we couldn't agree more. The prices are reasonable for the quality of food you receive and the atmosphere is busy yet friendly.

Hawksmoor in Shoreditch supplies its entire menu from within the United Kingdom and serve excellent quality steak. In fact, they don't do anything that isn't close to perfection. Charcoal grilled meat ensures that you don't leave unhappy, along with the extensive drinks list. We think that rather than go on about this place ourselves, we would let Daniel from Dalston summaries; 'I went for their Sirloin, still on the bone, cooked medium rare and weighing 600g. It was heaven. Cooked perfectly, served with a "triple cooked chips" which, if a little on the small size, were otherwise a perfect companion.' Perfection!
