the readerWhile the Oscar should have gone to Angelina Jolie, you can't fault Kate Winslet's performance - nor that of David Kross, who plays the young Ralph Fiennes.

But Stephen Daldry's direction is distinctly average.

Yes, the film tells an interesting story - it's an intimate drama which actually plays better on the small screen - but it could easily have been 20-30 minutes shorter.
