Sean Spicer: I let the President down with my painful mistake
White House press secretary Sean Spicer admits he 'screwed up' after saying unlike Bashar al-Assad in Syria, Adolf Hitler never used poison gas on his own people. Courtesy of c-span.org
"I hope I showed that I understand...I made a mistake," said White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer in this contrite moment...that's actually winning him some fans.
Spicer earned vociferous criticism from a number of Jewish groups, political opponents and media commentators after appearing to compare Bashar al-Assad to Adolf Hitler.
"We didn’t use chemical weapons in World War Two," said Spicer. "You had someone as despicable as Hitler who didn’t even sink to using chemical weapons."
Further comments just made the problem worse for Spicer, who's already a figure of ridicule on comedy shows like Saturday Night Live.
But appearing today at the Newseum in Washington DC, Spicer admitted his comments about Hitler were "inexcusable and reprehensible".
"I got into a topic that I shouldn't have and I screwed up," he said. "I would ask obviously for folks' forgiveness."
