VIDEO: Police Smash Car For Not Wearing Seatbelt
A 71-year-old has won damages of £20,000 after police smashed his car up after chasing him for not wearing a seatbelt.
Robert Whatley took legal action over the 17-minute chase in which the police smashed windows
The police officers were cleared in a disciplinary hearing and Gwent Police has made no admission of liability. However, they have agreed a payment of in excess of £20,000 for financial reasons.
The video of the incident was viewed by thousands of people on YouTube.
In respect of the out-of-court settlement, Gwent deputy chief constable Jeff Farrar said: "Gwent Police have not accepted any liability in this matter, however contesting the matter further would have incurred substantial legal costs if the case had gone to court.
"Therefore, whilst we maintain our position that we do not admit liability, a decision was made to settle the matter out of court on financial grounds."
