Was It Right To Strip This Sportsman Of His Medal?
Friday 15th August 2014
The French winner of the men's steeplechase at the European Athletics Championship has been stripped of his title - after he took off his top before crossing the finish line.
Mahiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad was the pre-race favourite but broke the rules by removing his vest near the end of the 3,000m event.
Mekhissi-Benabbad won the race in eight minutes and 7.45 seconds and was initially just shown a yellow card by the officials in Zurich.
An appeal from Spain saw him lose the title and fellow countryman Yoann Kowal was promoted to the gold medal position.

France lodged a counter-protest but that was rejected.
It is in the rules that athlete's bibs should not be obscured at any time during the race.
