Westminster Council Spends £2 Million Housing Homeless in Hotels

Friday 8th February 2013

Westminster Council insists it is having to house homeless people in three and four star hotels due to changes to housing benefit.

The Government says the practice is unacceptable but the authority insists it is only using hotels while it tries to re-house them.

Westminster council's Cabinet member for housing Jonathan Glanz has told us it is a temporary measure - and one they've been forced to take.

"There's been a large increase in the number of people that have been presenting themselves as homeless, primarily, I think, because of changes in the housing benefit regime and also because of the general economic situaltion where people who have been in private accommodation find themselves no longer able to pay their rent."

In the first nine months of last year it is understood the council spent £2 million on putting people up in the hotels.

Bills for some families are more than £12,000 a month.
