Westminster Parking Charge Plans: The Big Names Respond
Westminster council wants to abolish free parking on single yellow lines and impose charges in parking bays between 6.30pm and midnight Monday to Saturday, and between 1pm and 6pm on Sundays.
Westminster Council says the measures are meant to protect local residents, who were finding it hard to park near their homes, and reduce congestion in the area.
LBC 97.3 has been speaking to the big names of the West End to get their reactions...
Actress Linda Bellingham
"It just incenses you. I know it's tough, I know times are hard... but surely somebody in that council must have weighed up what they'll lose in tourist trade.
"We have a huge tourist attraction in the West End, in our theatres. It is second to none. It can't be any worse for people trying to take their families out - a family of four and the parking charges on top of it!
"There is no other city in the world that seems to do this and I cannot believe that if you looked at where the costs are and how they run that council that they can't claw it back from somewhere else.
"It's dangerous. The idea for me getting on the night bus - it doesn't bare thinking about! Apart form the fact that people feel they need to come and talk to me - I'd be there all night!
"Surely, surely they have some respect for artists!"
