What are the bulletholes on Kew Bridge?

On the side of Kew Bridge, I noticed what appeared to be a row of about 12 bulletholes on the road-side, fairly randomly-placed. Are they really bulletholes, or if not, what are they?

Answer: It was wrong an aerial dogfight during the war. The Germans used to use the river to navigate around. They are German bulletholes.
