What happens to planes when air traffic control goes down?

Last week, the control tower of Gatwick closed after being hit by lightning. What happened to the planes circling over the airport?

Answer: If an aircraft was on final approach into Gatwick and lost contact, it would go back to their previous frequency, which goes to a remote air control facility near Southampton. They would they take over.
