What spec for a second-hand laptop?

After spilling coffee on my laptop, I’m looking for a new one. A local shop says he can do me a good deal on a second-hand one – around £200. What should I be looking for?
Barry, London

Here’s a checklist of things that you need to check:
- Make sure you find out how much RAM (memory) the laptop has – with Windows XP, you want at least 3GB of RAM.
- How big is the hard drive?
- Battery life is important – how long does it last?

You should get something very good for that price – new computers don’t cost too much more than that.

Of course, if you’re insured, this counts as accidental damage, so you can claim for that and get a new one.
