Why Are Main Roads Called High Streets?

Why is a High Street called a High Street? In America it is a Main Street - which makes more sense.

Answer: Hundreds of years ago we called all our main routes Highways and as language evolved they've become known as High Streets.
James - Why were they called Highways though?
