Why are members of the upper class called Toffs. And why are posh people known as ‘Toffee-nosed’?

Answer: It’s from the 16th century, when the landed gentry used to use snuff profusely. The snuff used to colour their noses a toffee colour. Working class couldn’t afford it, so the upper classes became known as toffee-nosed or toffs.
