Why are sideburns so called?

Question

One from my five-year-old daughter: Why are sideburns called sideburns?
Paul, Wimbledon

Answer

Ambrose Burnside** Definitive **
Name: James, Kingston
Qualification: Old age!
Answer: There was a Captain Burnside in the US Cavalry, who had a beard going down the side of his face with whiskers and that’s where the word comes from.
