Why are watches in adverts always at 1:50?

Watches in all adverts are at 10:10 or 1:50. Why?

Name: James O’Brien
Qualification: Own a watch
Answer: It’s because the watch looks like it’s smiling and therefore you’re more likely to buy it.

** Definitive **
Name: Pam
Qualification: Used to own a clock shop
Answer: It’s set at 1:50 as that is the time that King Charles I was killed and the watches are set to that time as a memorial. He was a patron of clocks.
(James O’Brien: I think it was 1:54, not 1:50 he died, so I still prefer my answer)
