Why can I not remember things before an accident?

Question

If you're in a car accident, why do you remember the moments leading up to the crash, but not during or after it? I can't remember anything from getting into the car to waking up in hospital.
Chris, Cheshire

Answer

** Definitive **
Name: Howard, Dulwich
Qualification: Can't remember
Answer: There are two memory mechanism in the brain - short-term and long-term. Short term remembers over seconds and minutes and long-term is where things are put after that. If you have a trauma to the head, they never get passed to the long-term memory, which is why you never remember them.
