Why do flammable and inflammible mean the same?

Question

Why do flammable and inflammible mean the same whereas appropriate and inappropriate are opposite?
Paul, Loughton

Answer

**Definitive**
Name: Andy, Greenwich
Qualification: Fireman
Answer:  They do still mean the opposite. Flammible is something that burns and will burn whereas inflammible is something liable to inflame. Cardboard is flammible, gas is inflammible because as soon as part of it goes up all of it does.
