Why do we call teachers "Miss"?

Question

At school, why do we call the teachers Mrs O’Brien, but when we call them, we say “Miss, Miss, Miss”?
Steve, Stonely

Answer

** Definitive **
Name: Barry, Barnhurst
Qualification: My wife is a teacher’s assistant and has a booklet of the rules and regulations of teachers from the 1930s.
Answer: Traditionally – and this happened up until the second world war – female teachers were not allowed to marry. If they got married, they had to leave the profession. So all teachers were Miss.
