Why do worms hide under my gardening bags?

When I’m gardening, why do I keep finding worms whenever I pick up a bag? I never see them crawling under it. How do they get there and why do they like it there?

Answer: They really like dark places, so they really like paving slabs, hence the reason they go under them if they can. If you take the lid off the wormery, they start burrowing down.
