Why does the milometre on my Vespa not move when I'm spinning wheels?

Question

vespaWhen I rev the wheels of my Vespa scooter when it’s on its stand, the speedometer doesn’t move. How does it know?
Joe, Fulham

Answer

** Definitive **
Name: Martin, Kent
Qualification: Motorcycle engineer
Answer: The speedometer runs off the front wheel, so when the wheels are off the ground, the sensor knows that it’s not moving and doesn’t move the speedometer.
