Why doesn't blood sink to your feet?

Question

One from my boy – when you do a handstand, all the blood rushes to your head, but when you stand up, it doesn’t sink to your feet. Why?
Chris, Bromley

Answer

** Definitive **
Name: James O’Brien
Qualification: Mystery Hour legend
Answer: It’s because we are designed to be upright. When we go upside down it’s unusual, but our heart is designed to pump blood around the body when we are the right way up.

** Scientific Definitive **
Name: Fred, Guildford
Qualification: Bloody good!
Answer: You have one-way valves in your thighs and calves which stop the blood going back up. So when you are upside down, the blood cannot get through those valves.
