Why is a codpiece so called?

Why is a codpiece called a codpiece?
Matt, Richmond

Why is a cod-piece called a cod-piece?
Name: Ian, Paddington
Qualification: I had an odd history teacher who told us this.
Answer: Cod means ‘scrotum’ in Middle English language. That’s why it’s called a codpiece. More generally, it was also used to mean ‘bag’.
