Why is a glass called a 'tumbler'?

Why is a drinking glass known as a ‘tumbler’?
Stephen, Streatham

Answer

** Definitive **
Name: Stan, Gillingham
Qualification: I’ve been to medieval re-enactments
Answer: Originally, back in medieval times, the glasses used to have rounded bottoms, so you couldn’t put them down or they would tumble over. Early glass-blowing had not perfected the art of making a flat bottom.
