Why is a Pound in Weight Lbs?

A pound in weight is abbreviated to lbs - when kilograms is kg, centimetres is cm - why?

James: Latin - Libra is scales in Latin and it comes from there. Not quite right but I'm close.

Answer: There is an old language - I don't know what it is - and in it 'libre' is pound.
