Why is a vent called a 'hit and miss' vent?

Question

British Gas came around and looked at my house and the engineer told me I had a “hit and miss” vent, which is one of those brass vents with the sliding switch. Why is it called a hit and miss?
Andrew, Islington

Answer

** Definitive **
Name: Phil, Putney
Qualification: Heating engineer
Answer: They are a series of straight lines. So when they line up, they hit and when they don’t line up, they miss. We use them a lot in the plumbing trade.
