Why is front crawl called freestyle?

Question

In swimming, there are freestyle races. But they all use front crawl. Has anyone ever used any stroke other than front crawl?
Adam, Muswell Hill

Answer

** Definitive **
Name: Hugh, Brecon
Qualification: Used to be a competitive swimmer
Answer: The other three strokes have a stroke standard, for example a screw kick in breaststroke. But freestyle is simply the fastest you can get through the water in whatever style you want - there are no restrictions. But front crawl is always the fastest stroke.
