Why Is it Called Mince 'Meat' in Mince Pies?

Question:

Why do We Call Mince Meat 'meat' when there is no meat in it?

Answer:

Name:Nigel, Purley
Qualification: Learnt it at school
Answer: Long ago before you had freezers when you had to kill off your herd - you'd layer fruit and meat and the fruit juices would keep the meat fresh. Towards Christmas you'd have lots of fruit and not much meat so you'd use it to create pies.
