Why is one side of the road even numbers and the other odd?
Question
Why is one side of the road even numbers and the other odd?Gary, Sevenoaks
Answer
**Definitive**Name: Bill, Fleet
Qualification: Was on a council.
Answer: The house numbers go from the centre of the town outwards - the higher the number the further away from the town centre you are. The house opposite number one will be closer to the centre than the one beside it so is number two. It is now a convention. Also it is beneficial for map making so you can work out where everything is.
