Why is the alphabet in that order?
Question
Mark, Chiswick: Who came up with the order of the alphabet?
Answer
**Definitive**
Name: David Kessler, Carshalton
Qualification: Author, researched it for a new book ( 'Moses Legacy' but using the name Adam Palmer)
Answer: There is not a reason for the order, it developed over time as it all evolved. The Egyptians were the main source of most alphabets.
Letters were developed for trading. A symbol of what the word stood for was used and then came to represent the first sound/letter of that word.
The early alphabets did not have vowels.
You can find the origin of letters but not the order they are in.
