Why is the Army not The Royal Army?

red-arrows.jpgQuestion

We have a Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, but a British Army… why is it not the Royal Army?
Andrew, South Norwood

Answer

** Definitive **
Name: Adam, Bracknell
Qualification: Due to join the forces in February
Answer: It’s because Cromwell took an Army with him as part of the Roundheads rather than the Cavaliers who were loyal to the crown. Therefore, they were not part of the Royal Army. Certain regiments are still Royal, such as the Royal Artillery.
