Why were M&S clothes branded St Michael?

When I was a little girl, I had Marks & Spencer vests and the label said St Michael. Why? Why not M&S?

Answer: The founder of Marks and Spencers was Michael Marks, who started with a market stall in Leeds. Then his son Simon Marks wanted to commemorate his father’s name, so he created St Michael. It was only when they had new management in the 1980s that they decided to drop the brand name.
