Will £30bn Road Tunnel Be Built Under London?
Monday 12th May 2014
This is the route of the 22-mile M25-style underground tunnel that is being proposed under London.
The £30billion project would provide dual carriageways under the capital, taking tens of thousands of cars off the surface roads every day.
The Evening Standard reports that the route, which has the backing of Mayor Boris Johnson, would help improve air quality, while allowing drivers to get around the city faster.
"We've got to look at it, it's a fantastic scheme. Obviously it's something that TfL have been developing," the Mayor of London commented.
"London is growing, we need to find ways of getting people around the city but in an environmentally friendly way. We need to think about these tunnels, they've been done in places like Stockholm, they've been done in Brussels, they've been done in Boston.
"I think this could be the way forward and it's very important we get it on the map."
This is the latest in a line of underground projects to have piqued the Mayor's interest. In March, he told LBC he was overjoyed by plans for a Hammersmith Flyunder to replace the ailing flyover.
