Zombieland
I can't say I'm a fan of the horror comedy genre. And zombie flicks don't really do it for me. So, walking into last week's screening, I had pretty low expectations, figuring I was about to watch an American version of 'Shaun of the Dead' (surely one of the most over-rated films of recent years).
It's always good to be proved wrong. Zombieland is a movie-lover's movie - loaded with clever verbal and visual film references. It ticks all the right boxes: it's inventive, intense, outrageously sick, graphically gory, and incredibly funny. In fact, it's hilarious; the most fun I've had at the cinema since The Hangover.
As always, Woody Harrelson delivers, but Jesse Eisenberg steals the show. Move over Michael Cera: Jesse will be getting all the awkward, geeky nice guy roles from now on. This film also features the best celebrity cameo… ever! I'm not going to spoil it for you - and I hope other reviewers have the decency to do the same.
Congratulations to talented writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, plus promising director Ruben Fleischer for delivering a genius comedy.
