The US President said there is a "high degree of certainty" that the likely gunman has been found following a two-day manhunt.
He added that "someone that was very close to him turned him in," with a "minister" and his own father having helped in his capture.
"I think with a high degree of certainty we have him in custody. He's in custody," he told Fox News.
"He's gonna be found guilty, I imagine, and I hope he gets the death penalty. Charlie Kirk was the finest person, he didn't deserve this," Trump added.

He said the suspect is thought to be "28 or 29". Other sources say the suspect is thought to be 22. The person of interest was previously described as being "of college age".
Trump added: "You know, getting somebody that you start off with absolutely nothing - and we started off with a clip that made him look like an ant - that was almost useless. We just saw somebody up there.
"And so much work has been done over the last two and a half days. You know, it's amazing really, when you start off with that and then all of a sudden you get lucky, or talent, or whatever it is."
The suspect was reportedly arrested in St. George, Utah, near Zion National Park, about 250 miles southwest of the campus where Kirk was killed, according a law enforcement official who requested anonymity.
Investigators had appealed for help, with the FBI offering a $100,000 (£73,906) reward for information that could lead to the suspect's identification as they scrambled to track down the killer.
CCTV released on Thursday footage showed a 'person of interest' wearing a black top with what appears to be a USA flag in the middle, along with sunglasses and a black hat with a white logo.
He is seen in the footage running across a building roof and jumping off, before casually strolling towards a street at the edge of the campus and fleeing the scene through a wooded area.
A high-powered bolt action rifle believed to have been used to shoot and kill Kirk was recovered by officials yesterday as the search closed in.
Father-of-two Kirk was shot in the neck 20 minutes into a student-sponsored event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday.
Kirk, who was known for holding outdoor debates on campuses across the US, was responding to a question from an audience member about mass shootings when a shot rang out.
Graphic footage shared online shows Kirk sustained a serious injury to his neck. Spectators can be seen screaming and running away after the shot was fired.
Kirk was taken to hospital but just a few hours later President Trump announced Kirk's death on Truth Social.
He wrote: "The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie.
"He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!"
