The man, who has not been named, was set on fire and beaten in a remote village in the Amazon rainforest.

A local broadcaster described the killing as a "shocking act of apparent community justice".

The man had been arrested by police in Playas del Cuyabeno on suspicion of being involved in a fatal shooting.

Around six hours later a crowd is said to have broken into the police station and dragged him out, according to the Ecuavisa outlet.

The man was set on fire in the street in front of the station. He died from his burns.

Specialist police had been due to come to the station to take the man to the provincial capital, about 75 miles away.

But they were too slow to arrive because the area is hard to get to, being accessible only by river.

The regular officers are said to have decided not to intervene when the mob broke into the station, out of concerns for their own safety.

The British Foreign Office is believed to be following up on the incident and working with Ecuadorean authorities to confirm the details.

The killing took place after an event held by the Kichwa indigenous community. The Kichwa are the largest indigenous group in the Ecuadorean region.

Despite being remote, Playas del Cuyabeno is a popular eco-tourist area. It is nearly 200 miles from Ecuador's capital, Quito.
