The Rainbow Bridge, which connects the two countries, was forced to close as a result of the explosion, which occurred after a car tried to enter the United States from Canada.

Pictures posted online shows what appears to be a destroyed car and a damaged kiosk booth.

Both people who died were in the car that exploded. Law enforcements sources told CNN it was driving to a "secondary search area" when it exploded.

All four international border crossings between New York and Canada have been closed following the explosion.

The New York Governor says the explosion was not terror-related.

Law enforcement sources previously said they believed it could have been an 'attempted terror attack', according to Fox News.

Local government offices nearby were also evacuated, according to a member of the New York State Assembly.

The bridge was closed at around 11.51am following the incident, according to the Niagara International Transportation Technology Coalition.

New York State Governor Kathy Hochul previously said: "I’ve been briefed on the incident on the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls and we are closely monitoring the situation.

"State agencies are on site and ready to assist."
