The latest figures emerging from Ukraine confirm the death toll has now risen to 31 - including two child, with Russian ballistic missiles striking civillians in the eastern city.

A further 84 people have been injured, including seven children, Ukraine's state emergency service added.

Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, condemned the deadly strike on Sunday and called for a tough international response to the attacks.

Ukraine's interior minister, Ihor Klymenko, confirmed the strike took place in the eastern city of Sumy on Sunday morning.

The city lies in a area close to the Kursk region which has seen fierce fighting between Russian and Ukrainian troops in recent months.

Klymenko said the victims were those walking in the streets and travelling on public transport, with nearby buildings destroyed in the missiles strike.

"Deliberate destruction of civilians on an important church feast day," he said.

Writing on Sunday, Zelenskyy posted to Telegram: "Only scoundrels can act like this. Taking the lives of ordinary people".

"Tough reaction from the world is needed" he said following the strike.

"Russia wants exactly this kind of terror and is dragging out this war," he added.

"Without pressure on the aggressor, peace is impossible.

"Talks have never stopped ballistic missiles and air bombs. We need the kind of attitude towards Russia that a terrorist deserves."

Ukraine's emergency services confirmed: "People were injured right in the middle of the street, in cars, public transport, in houses."

The emergency service said police have restricted access to the affected area and investigators and forensic experts are at the scene.

"Now every minute is important for the lives of the injured," they said in a statement.

It follows claims from Zelenskyy that two Chinese soldiers were discovered fighting alongside Russia in the region.

The pair were captured as members of their group escaped, with the two identified using bank cards, ID cards and other documents, Ukraine said.
