Two men, aged 19 and 65, suffered gunshot wounds while an 18-year-old woman suffered a graze to her neck, a spokeswoman for the New York Police Department said.

All three victims were taken to the hospital and remain in a stable condition.

A suspect was taken into custody as the NYPD continues its investigation.

One onlooker took to X to share footage of police and ambulance workers arriving on the scene.

Leeroy Johnson captioned the video: “Three people have been shot in the heart of Times Square.

“Bodies are on the ground, bullet holes pierce car windows. The chaos unfolded near a major tourist area. One suspect is in custody.”

He added he was “two cars in front of the car that got shot up”.

The shooting is believed to have taken place a block away from Times Square, close to the New York Hard Rock Cafe.

It comes just weeks after four people, including a police officer, were killed in a mass shooting at the NFL headquarters in New York.

The suspect, who died from what's thought to be self-inflicted injuries during the attack, has been identified as 27-year-old man Shane Devon Tamura from Las Vegas.

The lone gunman was captured on CCTV footage sauntering across the square in front of the Manhattan building, semi-automatic rifle in hand, moments before he opened fire on workers inside the skyscraper.

Tamura died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest after he opened fire on the officer stationed in the lobby of the building, before gunning down three employees, officials have said.

The building - home to the NFL's headquarters as well as hedge fund giant Blackstone - was placed on lockdown, with surrounding buildings evacuated as police tried to ascertain whether multiple suspects were at large.
