Police are hunting for a driver after a 62-year-old woman has died after a hit-and-run driver crashed into her mobility scooter on New Year's Eve.

Detectives have launched a manhunt after the tragedy occurred in Cannock, Staffordshire at around 6:30pm.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision at the junction of Pye Green Road and Saint Aidan's Road.

Staffordshire Police said in a statement: "Despite the best efforts of emergency service staff, she sadly died at the scene.

"Her family have been informed and will be offered support from specially-trained officers. The driver of the car failed to stop and enquiries are on-going to trace them."

Officers are now seeking to trace a car with front-end damage, thought to be a silver-coloured Volkswagen Golf.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or who has any information that could help with the investigation, including relevant dash-cam footage, is asked to contact police on 101.
